Bella Brix Klein
Bella Brix Klein , daughter of the renowned Yiddish writer Rachael Brix, was born on November 2, 1948, in Stockholm, Sweden. Bella was a well-known activist in Yiddish cultural circles. She grew up in New York City and immigrated to Israel to study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. During her studies, she met and married Yona Klein, who sadly passed away in 1998.
After a long professional career in the pharmaceutical industry, Bella became a leading figure in the Yiddish field thanks to her important contributions. For years she was the director of the Israeli branch of the Arbeter Ring (Labor League) and the Bund in Tel Aviv, known as "Klisher" (since it is located on this street). Bella constantly organized and advertised their events and thanks to her, "Klisher" continued to operate for another decade as a leading cultural center in Israel. She was a representative of the New York Forward newspaper in Tel Aviv, ensuring that issues were sent to subscribers. When the funds for distribution from the New York office ran out, she continued this work on her own, because she knew how important it was for Holocaust survivors in Israel to receive a Yiddish newspaper. Bella saw a need and created, compiled and distributed the electronic newsletter "What, When, Where" ("What, When, Where") herself, which provided up-to-date listings of all events related to Yiddish in Israel. Bella was a member of the board of directors of "Beit Leivik" and active in local cultural events.
Bella dedicated many years to the literary legacy of her father, Yerachmiel Brix, and ensured that his works were recognized and translated. She created and performed a solo show, "In My Father's Footsteps," at the California Institute of Yiddish Language and Culture in Los Angeles. In this show, she described, through songs and anecdotes, her childhood, when she grew up with a burden of gifts and even a burden of spreading her father's work. The show was recorded on June 26, 2011. Bella loved nothing more than telling witty jokes and laughing along with her stories. Bella passed away in Petah Tikva, Israel, on Friday, August 16, 2024, at the age of 75. Bella's children, Gil, Rami, and Sarit continue their mother's legacy.
